Do I Need MTD If I'm Employed and Self-Employed?
How having a PAYE job alongside self-employment or rental income affects your MTD obligations.
What counts towards the threshold
The MTD threshold is based on your gross self-employment turnover plus gross rental income, combined — not your total income across all sources. If you have a PAYE job and a side business, only the side business's gross income counts toward whether you're mandated into MTD.
Worked example
Sarah earns £45,000 a year from a full-time PAYE job, and also runs a small self-employed consultancy on the side with gross turnover of £12,000. Only the £12,000 counts toward the MTD threshold — her £45,000 salary is irrelevant to whether she's mandated, and £12,000 is well below the current thresholds, so she wouldn't need to join MTD based on this income alone.
What you do and don't report through MTD
- Reported quarterly through MTD: self-employment income and expenses, rental income and expenses
- Not reported quarterly: PAYE salary, dividends, savings interest — these continue as normal (PAYE through payroll) and are added in at the Final Declaration stage
How your Final Declaration pulls it together
Once you're in MTD, your Final Declaration at year-end covers your whole tax position — the totals from your quarterly self-employment and property updates, plus your PAYE income, dividends, and any other income, all combined to work out your overall tax liability, in the same way the old Self Assessment return used to.
Why this trips people up
It's a common misconception that a high overall income (salary plus side income) automatically triggers MTD. In reality, HMRC looks specifically at your self-employment and rental income for the threshold test, so someone with a high salary and modest side income may never be mandated, while someone with a lower salary but substantial self-employed turnover could be brought in sooner.
