Council tax band FAQs

How is my council tax band decided?
Bands are based on what your property would have sold for on 1 April 1991 (or 1 April 2003 in Wales), not its current value. This is set by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), not your local council — the council only sets the rate charged for each band.
Can I check what band my property is?
Yes, use our free council tax band checker to look up any UK property by postcode, or check the government's own listing at gov.uk/council-tax-bands.
Does renovating my house change my council tax band?
Improvements alone don't trigger a re-band while you still live there. However, a band G property can be reassessed the next time it's sold if significant improvements (like an extension) have increased its value since 1991.
Can my council tax band be reduced?
Yes, if you can show similar properties nearby are in a lower band, or your property was incorrectly banded. See our step-by-step appeal guide — a successful challenge is backdated to when you moved in.
Do all UK properties have a council tax band?
Almost all domestic properties do. New builds are assigned a band by the VOA shortly after completion, based on what they would have been worth in 1991 terms. A small number of properties (certain annexes, agricultural buildings) are exempt entirely.
