Official ways to find a regulated accountant

If you'd rather search independently, the professional bodies that regulate UK accountants run their own free, official directories:

ICAEW “Find a Chartered Accountant” — official directory of over 21,000 ICAEW-regulated firms, searchable by location and specialism.
ACCA member directory — find ACCA-qualified accountants and firms, another internationally recognised UK qualification.

Do I need a qualified accountant, or can anyone do my books?▼

Anyone can technically prepare a Self Assessment return, but "accountant" isn't a legally protected title in the UK. Looking for ICAEW, ACCA or ICAS after someone's name means they're regulated by a recognised professional body.
